Nokia Lumia 800 Review

lumia-800-reviewFinally! Nokia has ditched the Symbian operating system that’s held it back for so long and moved on to something that’s altogether fresher, more intuitive, more versatile and yes, more fun, with Windows Phone.

The Lumia 800 is the first Nokia phone to make the move and the Finnish company has backed it up with just about everything in its extensive arsenal of techno tricks, with a fancy polycarbonate shell, a good screen, fast processor, 8-megapixel camera and consummate build quality.

Design
It’s big, but not too big, at 117x61x12mm and 142g — plenty of room for the sharp 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen, but slim and sleek enough to fit easily into any pocket. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack on top, with the microUSB sync/charge port and micro-SIM each hidden behind a tough plastic cover.

The AMOLED screen sits behind tough gorilla glass and offers 800×480 pixels and is sharp as a tack — maybe not quite as sharp as the finely ground premium tacks of the iPhone or Samsung’s Super AMOLED screens, but it’s really not far off. Films look great, and browsing using the default Internet Explorer 9 browser is a breeze. Pinch to zoom helps of course, and the browser renders pages well.

Windows Phone
Windows Phone 7.5 is quite possibly the most fun of all the operating systems right now, largely because it’s packed with lots of cute little details, like the background pics selected from your gallery and various 3D effects. Fortunately, it’s also practical — easy to find your way around, and fast too, thanks to the 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon processor backed by 512MB RAM.

Sadly the fun dies off a bit when you reach the Windows Marketplace, which falls well behind the number of offerings available for the iPhone or Android devices. But it’s growing.

This latest version of the OS includes support for multitasking and good social networking integration with Facebook and Twitter, as well as more active tiles (more of those big square tiles that you add to your homepage now offer live updates, a bit like Android’s widgets).

Camera and music
The 8-megapixel camera features a Carl Zeiss lens, LED flash and autofocus, but it’s a wee bit too fussy about light and a bit too slow to be a success as a quick snapper. So long as you take your time with it you can get some decent shots, but it doesn’t quite have the point-and-shoot ease of the camera on the iPhone for instance. It will record video in 720p HD at 30fps though.

The music player has an extra trick up its sleeve with free music streaming courtesy of Nokia Mix Radio. This is a bit like a simplified version of Last.fm — you choose a genre, eg “rock”, and from a choice of playlists. The functionality is limited, but it is free, and doesn’t even require a subscription.

The many extras include the Nokia Drive satnav software, which unfortunately uses Bing Maps, so doesn’t yet offer the same kind of detail that we’ve come to expect from Google Maps.

There’s 16GB of memory on board, but like other Windows Phone handsets, there’s no microSD slot which would allow you to expand this further.

The 1450mAh battery gave a decent showing, delivering a good day and a half of heavy use.

Conclusion
The Nokia Lumia 800 is a hi-tech phone at the higher end of midrange prices, so it’s a bit cheaper than the top Android handsets from Samsung and HTC. It won’t blow the competition out of the water the way the iPhone has often done in the past, but it’s a very capable handset and definitely worth a look if you’ve even a passing interest in the Windows Phone OS.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Ban Lifted In Australia

Samsung Electronics Co. is free to sell its Galaxy tablet computers in Australia after the country’s highest court Friday dismissed rival Apple’s appeal in its global patent battle.

The High Court had temporarily banned sales of the Galaxy pending a final decision on whether to allow Apple Inc., creator of the iPad and iPhone, to appeal a lower court ruling in favor of Samsung.

Following the ruling, Samsung said in a statement that its Galaxy Tab 10.1 “will be available in stores in time for the Christmas shopping period.”

Apple took Samsung to court in Australia after accusing the South Korean company of copying its iPad and iPhone. In October, a judge ordered Samsung to halt sales of the Galaxy ahead of a trial. But Samsung went back to court, challenged the decision and won the right to resume sales.

But Apple immediately appealed that decision to the High Court, which granted a temporary injunction pending a final decision.

The battle began in April, when Cupertino, California-based Apple sued Samsung in the United States, alleging the product design, user interface and packaging of Samsung’s Galaxy devices “slavishly copy” the iPhone and iPad.

Samsung responded by filing its own lawsuits that accused Apple of patent infringement of its wireless telecommunications technology.

The fight has spread to 10 countries, with courts in several nations – including Germany and the Netherlands – ruling in favor of Apple. It has highlighted the perception that Samsung – the global No. 1 in TVs and No. 2 in smartphones by sales – is more of an imitator of clever technologies than an innovator in its own right.

Apple, by contrast, is generally viewed by consumers as highly original and inventive.
